Undressing Disability/End The Awkward launch event at The Gherkin

OK SO, I’ve been promising this blog since SATURDAY! and I am SO sorry for the delay. I can’t wait to get started on this blog and tell you more about the Enhance The UK/Scope launch at the Gherkin last week!

Last week was absolutely crazy, after running around for Virgin Media Charity week, being in and out of meetings all day on Tuesday and spending Wednesday making an all important hair transition – I was more than ready for Thursday and the excitement that the Enhance/Scope launch would bring!

We got up super early and packed our trademark HUGEEEE suitcase  with clothing options, make up, hair products and of course HATS! We then drove in to Birmingham ready to catch our train to London Euston.

(How excited do we look!?) We were staying in Whitechapel (near The Gherkin) so we grabbed a cab straight over. The room was nice but there wasn’t LOADS to do so we quickly got changed into our clothes for the launch, (after raiding the mini bar) I topped up the eye make up and added a layer of hair spray… then we left!

We decided prior to the event that we needed to grab something to eat as following all of our crazy running around we’d not eaten.. and when I’m out and about I love to do a quick review for my business. So we went over to Sushi Samba which is around a 5 minute walk from The Gherkin.

I’m SO glad we did as I often send my clients there and the food is amazing! It’s also on the 38th Floor and has a stunning view over London and lights all over the celling that look like beautiful stars haha.. It’s pretty romantic and it definitely got us in the mood for the launch!

At Sushi Samba they encourage you to order small plates to share (similar to a tapas restaurant) and there are so many amazing options to choose from, as well as some INSANE cocktails.(pictures featured below). We ordered the Kobe Beef Gyoza, Yellowfin Tacquitos and the Shrimp Tempura, we also ordered a glazed pork belly.. but yeah, we ate that prior to a photo opportunity haha. The cocktails featured below are the Nashi Martini and the Smoked Plum Negroni.

After a few shots of Cafe Patron XO. We were on our way to The Gherkin!

On arrival we were met by Scope and Enhance The UK, which is always a pleasure! I was then introduced to, and interviewed by Cathal from Independent IE who was also covering the event. We then went up in the lift to the 10th floor and we were greeted by the beautiful photographs from the Enhance The UK Undressing Disability series (mine included!).

Throughout the evening I managed to catch up with (and finally meet!) some amazing people from the disability community who I have admired and closely followed. After a few drinks we all Sat down to a talk from Scope around the End The Awkward campaign – it was fantastic to hear about all of the ongoing projects, feedback and future endeavours that Scope have in mind to keep promoting a positive image of disability in the mainstream media! It was also great to see some of the videos from the End The Awkward campaign as they never fail to make me smile.

Following that Jennie (Enhance The UK) took to the floor showcasing two of the latest Enhance The UK films surrounding Disability, Sex and Relationships. The films were forward thinking and gave a modern and equal insight into what it’s like to be disabled…and sexy!

Jen’s speech actually made me tear up slightly! As I am SO passionate about the Undressing Disability campaign. What Enhance are trying to do speaks to me on so many levels! There were so many times when I was younger, self conscious, and had no idea how to put myself out there, that if I had the support of Enhance it would have saved me so much mental space, and a hell of a lot of embarrassment haha! So much of what was said by others in the videos really hit home and took me back to the times where I genuinely doubted myself so deeply.

The evening was an absolute rollercoaster but overall a night for HUGE celebration! Both of the campaigns are really taking off and the evening just highlighted that further. There was a great sense of community and unity in the room and everyone there was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never had so much fun talking to people from all over the country, from different business backgrounds that are all equally successful and interesting.

All in all we met SO many amazing people, and had THE best night! I am also pleased to say that Jennie has given me permission to feature my photos on the site.. so if you do not wish to see me in my underwear please look away now haha!
